Mystery today surrounds the unexpected and premature demise of the pop singer Stephen Gately.
It seems that he went for a night out while on holiday with his partner, Andy Cowls, in Majorca and died later that evening. It now seems that he may have died in his sleep.
The pair went out to a party and when they later retired to their bed(s) Stephen simply never woke up. The singer, seen above in concert at Wembley in May 2009, was 33.
His fans are now demanding to know how he died. His death, just before the release of the Boyzone Greatest Hits album, is completely unexpected. He wasn't exactly a Rolling Stone.

A year before Boyzone split in 2000, Gately famously came out as gay, one of the few performers in a popular boy band ever to do so. He and his partner (right) had a civil ceremony in London in 2006. The move to come out was a very brave move - he effectively came out before he was pushed by the tabloids. This was at a time when members of boybands really didn't do that kind of thing. He had some solo success with three top twenty solo singles and appeared in a number of West End musicals.
Louis Walsh, who managed the band has said that he is in complete shock at the news. Certainly, the pair had last been together on Monday 5 October at an awards ceremony. Walsh - and the other members of the band - are as much in the dark as the rest of us at the moment as to the cause of death. They are expected to fly out to Majorca today (Sunday) in a show of support for Stephen and his family. The last Twitter announcement by the singer stated that he was going to stay quiet for a while and concentrate on writing a book.
Although his career had not been as high profile since the band split up, Gately was pretty much down to earth and didn't mind doing all sorts of work to keep himself busy and in the public eye. As well as playing Joesph in the Amazing Technicolor musical, he also did a stint in that great old British tradition, panto, at Bromley in 2006.
The news that the other members of the group were to fly out to Majorca was rather cynically received by a commentator on BBC TV Breakfast News this morning who implied that the other band members were only doing this to get their faces in the newspapers. However, he was quickly put in his place by the host of the show.
Whatever the cause of death, this news has left thousands of fans in a state of shock. Whatever has led to the death of the popular and versatile performer will, hopefully, be discovered in the near future. In the meantime Boyzone are releasing their Greatest Hits album next week. We will leave the cynics to comment on the timing.
Stephen Gately had genuine Irish charm, a cheeky twinkle in his eyes and at his height (so I am told!) dimples to die for. He also seemed, in a sea of celebrity, to be someone who kept his feet firmly on the floor and was, by all reports, a lovely person to know. He will be missed by family, friends and fans alike.

its so sudden that steve left us like this. he was such an amazing person to meet. never ever bored of giving smiles and saying hello. I'm his fan from singapore and ive met him just once but i can feel that he has such a nice aura about him.. and such a great singing talent. He will always be remembered & missed. Love you steve!
I always was impressed by how he came over in interviews - just as a nice normal lad from a nice normal background. His family, friends and partner must be devatstated....
Stephen Gately, what a guy! Completely talented and appeared to be a down to earth, loving man. He will be greatly missed by many; He really has made his stamp in the world. Lots of love to his friends and family at this time.
It is a shame to hear of SG's death in mysterious circumstances, supposedly in his sleep.

The death of any young person is very sad. I feel for the family and friends who are left bewildered and shocked. The press will be all over them and their privacy will not be respected, such is the price of fame.

Party = too much drink = early night = choke to death on own vomit? I am only surmising. We are told there were no suspicious circumstances but wht can't an official hint be given as to why the lad died?

i never heard of boyzone until i got one of their cd's for christmas from my gran called by request....i listened to it over and over and over agin and one day as i was watching my soap coronation street i saw Kieth Duffy and i wanted to scream........they have the most angelic voices and when im down i listen to them and i fall in love with them over and over ........Stephen you will be sadly missed and i know that the band will miss you even more.....God rest your soul in piece <3

Wot a lovely, straightforward report that was. Stephen of course will be greatly and sadly missed. I am a middle aged mother who saw boyzone in concert several times and was amazed by their shows. Rest in peace dear Stephen. We will not forget you.

This is a wake up call to everyone. No one knows the day or the hour they may depart from this world. Scripture says anyone who denies JESUS in this life, will then be denied by Him on the day of judglement. Whether you believe in GOD or not, we are still all going to stand before Him on the day of judgement to give an account of our lives. God's word also says any man who lies with another man as with a woman will not enter the Kngdom of heaven. Forgiveness is available for those who truly repent, come away from that lifestyle giving their heart to JESUS who can deliver that person. Many a man/woman have been completely healed and restored to normal relationship marrying the oposite sex as GOD intended. I just wonder where Stephen Gately has gone to spend eternity?
There have been so many sad/tragic stories in the news lately. The reports on Gately's passing seem pretty vague in general, but there are (of course) a lot of rumors about it floating around
He will be greatly missed, as many people have already stated. As some people have said, only the good die young, so in Stephen's case, clearly, someone "upstairs" wanted him back home.
The gay "marriage" he enjoyed did not seem so great. Fuelled by drink, drugs, 3 in a bed sex.
The gay lifestyle is the issue the media does not want us to debate: the reality of it.
